This era is marked by a political-scientific-pseudo-millenarianism; the feeling of some impending cataclysm, which we all feel that we alone are best positioned to be the voice of reason. A deranged main character syndrome based upon apocalyptic preconditions.
The Singularity, Global Warming, World War 3. They are all merely symptoms of a larger catastrophizing at the core of a movement underlying the search for a savior. Of course, the singular identity of this savior is the one and only, I. A tautological prognostication of imminent demise, centered upon the glorification of the reason of the self. We are all saviors and martyrs in this age, which has discarded all its true saints. We tell ourselves that upon every bump in the road rests a peril so great that all is lost in defeat. But only so that we can be exalted for solving the iniquitous conflict which we imagined. Perhaps the answer is merely to recognize that we are not the voice of reason. We are merely irrational side-effects of a world without true leadership. Have we forgotten the serenity that comes from not accepting one’s fate and striving against it? (Or perhaps, I am merely eulogizing my own imprisonment within a simulacrum of my own making). Can we imagine a better future than the one upon which this peril rests? Can we envision a future where things are better than they were before? Is there no faith within me which could propel an ascent from learned helplessness? We need leadership to draw us out of this abyss. We need a positive vision for the future instead of a catastrophe waiting to happen.
